Onsen & Sento Manners

Hot spring bath etiquette

🚫

No Tattoos (Most Places)

⚠️ WARNING

Most traditional onsen and sento prohibit tattoos of any size. Some modern facilities allow them with tattoo covers. Always check in advance.

🧼

Wash BEFORE Entering

🚨 CRITICAL

You MUST thoroughly wash your body at the shower station before entering the communal bath. This is non-negotiable.

🩲

No Swimwear

❗ IMPORTANT

Traditional onsen and sento are entered completely nude. Swimwear is NOT allowed in the bath itself.

📱

No Photos in Bathing Areas

🚨 CRITICAL

Photography is strictly forbidden in all changing rooms and bathing areas. This is a serious privacy violation.

🏊

Small Towel Only

❗ IMPORTANT

Only a small modesty towel is allowed near the bath. Keep it folded on your head or place it on the side — never dip it in the water.

🍶

No Alcohol Before Bathing

⚠️ WARNING

Do not enter an onsen if you have been drinking alcohol. It is dangerous and disrespectful.

🤫

Keep Quiet

ℹ️ INFO

Onsen are places of relaxation. Speak quietly and avoid loud conversations or horseplay.
