Accommodation Manners

Hotel, ryokan & Airbnb etiquette

🗑️

Follow Garbage Rules

🚨 CRITICAL

In Airbnb/minpaku, follow the host's garbage sorting instructions. Incorrect disposal can cause serious problems with neighbors.

🔇

Respect Quiet Hours

🚨 CRITICAL

Most residential areas have quiet hours after 10pm. Noise complaints from neighbors can result in booking cancellation or legal issues.

🚬

No Smoking in Non-Smoking Rooms

🚨 CRITICAL

Smoking in non-smoking rooms can result in fines of ¥20,000–¥50,000 charged by the facility for cleaning.

🧹

Clean Up Before Leaving

❗ IMPORTANT

At minpaku (home-sharing), guests are expected to clean up and sort trash before checkout. This is Japanese culture.

👟

Remove Shoes at Entrance

❗ IMPORTANT

Always remove shoes at the entrance (genkan). Never walk on tatami mats with shoes or even regular socks in some ryokan.

🛁

Shared Bath Rules (Ryokan)

❗ IMPORTANT

If using a ryokan's communal bath, follow onsen rules (wash first, no towels in water). Book time slots if required.
