No Walking While Using Phone
'Aruki-sumaho' (walking while on phone) is banned in some areas. Kamakura bans it on Komachi-dori street. It's widely considered dangerous.
Escalator Etiquette
Stand on the left side of escalators (in Tokyo; right in Osaka). The other side is for people who wish to walk up.
Queue Patiently
Cutting in line is taken very seriously in Japan. Always find the end of the queue and wait your turn.
Eating While Walking
Eating while walking is generally frowned upon in Japan. Eat at a bench, in a food stall, or at the vendor's designated eating area.
Speak Quietly
Loud conversations in public are considered disruptive. This includes talking on phones in public spaces.
Umbrella Management
Use umbrella bags at store entrances to avoid dripping on floors. Never leave a wet umbrella dripping on the floor.
Blocking Entrances
Do not stand in doorways, station gates, or escalator bottoms to check your phone. Step aside and let others pass.
