Photography is often prohibited inside museums, art galleries, and special exhibitions unless explicitly stated. Look for camera icons on signs.
Temple & Shrine Interiors
The interior of main halls (honden/honden) is usually off-limits for photography. Exterior shots are generally fine.
Photographing People
Always ask permission before photographing strangers, especially in kimono/traditional dress. Geisha in Kyoto particularly dislike being photographed.
No Photos on Private Property
Never photograph inside private homes, traditional inns (ryokan), or restaurants without clear permission.
Gion District โ Photo Ban
Kyoto's Gion district has a photography ban on private alleys. Violators can be fined ยฅ10,000 on the spot.
Train Platforms & Facilities
Some stations and trains prohibit photography. Inside metro/trains, avoid photographing other passengers.
SNS & Privacy
Posting recognizable images of strangers on social media without consent can violate Japanese privacy law.
