Shrine & Temple Manners

How to visit sacred sites respectfully

🚰

Purify Hands at Temizuya

❗ IMPORTANT

At the entrance water basin (temizuya), purify your hands: Left hand first, then right, then rinse your mouth, then left hand again.

🙏

Two Bows, Two Claps, One Bow

❗ IMPORTANT

Standard shrine prayer: bow twice deeply, clap twice, make your prayer, then bow once more. Temple prayer is silent — no clapping.

Respect No-Photo Zones

🚨 CRITICAL

Many inner sanctuaries are strictly no-photography. Look for signs. Never photograph sacred objects or ceremonies without permission.

⛩️

Walk on the Side of the Path

❗ IMPORTANT

The center of the path (sandō) leading to the main shrine is for the gods. Walk to the side, not down the center.

🔒

Respect Restricted Areas

🚨 CRITICAL

Do NOT cross roped-off or clearly marked restricted areas. Trespassing in sacred areas can result in being removed.

🤫

Speak Quietly

ℹ️ INFO

These are active places of worship. Keep voices low and silence your phone.

🎋

Fortune Papers (Omikuji)

ℹ️ INFO

If you draw a bad fortune (kyō/daikyo), tie it to a tree or rack at the shrine. If good, keep it. Don't litter with them.
